Clinical Practice Stress and the Coping Methods of Emergency Department Students

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the stress experienced by emergency department studies students related to their clinical practice and the coping styles they applied to handle this stress. This study was conducted from September 11 until September 19, 2017. It showed that the average subject¡¯s stress due to their clinical practice was 2.37 out of 5 points. The data, when broken down further, shows that the average stress caused by the practical training environment was 2.72 points, the burden of practical work was 2.42 points, undesirable role models was 2.33 points, patient conflict was 2.23 points, and interpersonal conflict was 2.11 points. The overall average stress coping method of the subjects was 3.37 points out of five points. Specifically, the data revealed that social support scored 3.50 points, followed by hopeful coping with 3.49 points, next was problem-oriented coping with 3.43 points, and lastly emotion-centered coping got 3.08 points. Based on the above results, it was found that the stress related to their clinical practice was lower than usual for college students majoring in emergency department studies. Additionally, the social support of active coping, closely followed by hopeful coping, was the most common coping style used by the subjects.
